The Perks of not being the Island Connoisseur (aka my summer plans)

The Island Connoisseur for 60 Days in Paradise has been announced, and probably from the title of this post, you can figure out that I didn’t win. While I am kinda disappointed that I didn’t get this gig, I’m also okay with it. Like I said in my #60Days Top 10 post, being chosen for the Top 10 is proof that I’m doing something that people are responding to which is reassuring when you’re still just starting out.

To be honest, I’m not surprised I didn’t win. These online voting things are kinda bullshit. I mean, I’m a recent grad still trying to get my foot in the door so of course I’d apply. However, I don’t have a huge network or a massive following online to vote for me. It’s just the nature of being the noob on the block. My brother, who as a director has submitted short films into contests that had a similar voting structure, summed it up perfectly: “They should just decide based on your actual talent and merits, not make it some online popularity contest. Now, some dud with a lot of FB friends could win.” Well said good sir, well said.
*SIDE NOTE* My brother has mad skillz so if you’re looking for a director in Toronto, check out his stuff: jaydidit.com

But that’s enough about that – onto the future! It’s obvious that I’m not going to be spending the summer in Tobago so, what am I going to be doing this summer? Honestly, the large majority of it will be spent working at my day job. I’m still trying to save up enough money to move abroad but just because I’m in ultra money saving mode doesn’t mean I can’t have fun adventures!

I’m currently talking to a travel app about partnering with them (first partnership ever!). Even though I’m still drafting up what I want to do for them, I’m currently leaning towards getting out into the Waterloo Region for some exploration of my new town and region. If you’ve been to or are from Waterloo Region, let me know of some cool things to hit up. I’m always open to suggestions!

TBEX! I’m planning on going to the North American TBEX when and wherever they decide to have it. We’ve been on the edge of our seats waiting for it to be announced for a while now. Hopefully things will get solidified soon because after the amazing experience I had at my first TBEX there is no way I’m going to miss it but you know, I also need to plan stuff.

I’m also going to be accomplishing one of my bucket list items (or at least half of it) this summer! My father, who has been proving he knows me exceptionally well, bought me tickets to see my favourite soccer team play. That’s right! I’ll be going to see Real Madrid play in Michigan the first weekend in August. I mean, it would be better if I was going to Spain (a country I’ve dreamt about since I was a small child) to seeing them play at the Bernabeu but I’ll take it. I also haven’t seen much of Michigan so maybe there will be some Detroit area exploring to be done while visiting my dad who lives around there.

In non-travel related news: this summer I’m also going to be SERIOUSLY working on getting my art website up. I’ve been saying that I’ll do this for years but now as a post-grad it has become more pressing to have a good self-hosted portfolio online. I’ve been debating for a while what I want to call my art site and a logo and whatnot and I think I’ve finally decided on things that I could live with… or at least until my irrational eccentric artist brain kicks in and decides EVERYTHING needs to be changed.

Well, that’s it for now. I felt like after all the little competitions I’ve been in recently, I should give an update of what I have planned for the next couple months. Of course, these could always change if some exciting opportunity pops up or if I decide to go do something impulsive (which is somewhat typical of me) 😉

The Real Madrid game is going to be in Ann Arbor, my old college town! In my opinion, Ann Arbor deserves a day-trip of its own to explore 🙂 Can’t wait to hear about the football game!

Yea! The game is actually going to be at the University of Michigan. I’m super excited! Is there anything in Ann Arbor you’d recommend to check out?

This game is actually sold out which means you will probably be part of a record-breaking event — highest attendance at a soccer game in the U.S. Current record was set in 1984.

Woo! I’ve always wanted to be a part of something historical! 😛 I’m curious whether will be more Real Madrid fans or Manchester United fans there.

I’m sorry you didn’t win Meg 🙁 I’m guilty of entering contests too now and then but i completely agree with your brother, they should judge on talent and you my dear are very talented! Congrats on becoming a finalist but more so, for proving new travel bloggers can be JUST as great as veteran bloggers. I also think its not about how many fans or followers but the quality of them. Be true to yourself and your passion, and don’t get wrapped up in numbers or stats so much. You darling will do great things Xo

Thanks Cristina! Hopefully one day companies realize that they can send out open calls for bloggers/blogger wannabes but actually select the winner based on the talents. I always feel like I’m bugging people with the “Please vote for me” things. Ugh! But I think every blogger enters contests like that every so often. They tend to have crazy awesome opportunities.
I really enjoy doing this travel blogging thing and never really focused too much about the numbers. Though I’ve noticed the numbers have been slowly growing which is nice. I’m still optimistic about where things are heading for me. 🙂

I hate those travel contests that are based on votes! I don’t think it should be a popularity contest, but the quality of the work. oh well, I’m entering travel contest on what feels like a daily basis and still have yet to win one. but I’m still waiting! I’m extremely jealous you’re going to see Real Madrid play, I’ve been in love with Cristiano Ronaldo for as long as I can remember!

I tried joining the contest too. Obviously, I didn’t win too. Oh well…..

I’d have to agree about the popularity contest thing! It can make entering these kinds of things feel hopeless… but hey, there’s always hope! Congratulations on your partnership 🙂
