Rotorua was on the top of my list of places to visit on the North Island of New Zealand. The geothermic activity is famous and I was keen on taking a dip in one of the hot pools I’ve heard so much about. It turns there is more to this smelly town than the hot pools. I spent 3 days in Rotorua and managed to do quite a bit.
The Polynesian Spa was definitely the main goal of my visit to Rotorua and I’d say the highlight, the rest of the activities Rotorua had to offer pleasantly surprised me. I wasn’t expecting such a well-coordinated museum or any sort of night market even if it was small and lacking the excitement of others I’ve been to. It was also nice to find out how easy it was to make my journey to Hobbiton while staying in Rotorua. And all this is just what I managed to do in 3 days. There are plenty of things I didn’t get to do for one reason or another like Zorb or the luge or the redwood forest. There is a surprising amount of things available in Rotorua if you have the time and resources.
Rotorua is definitely a must do in New Zealand and I’m considering a second visit before leaving New Zealand – even if it’s just for another spa treatment.
And P.S. – if you were worried about the sulfur smell while visiting, I wouldn’t let it affect your decision. I only noticed the smell while right beside the lake. While in town, it smelled like any other town.
